Helpful Tips
1. When using Soft or Hard floating jigs they work best when tipped with live bait such as minnows, leaches, half a crawler or a whole crawler.
2. When using whole crawlers on the soft or hard floating jigs I always use a stinger hook.
3. You can use bullet weights, split shot sinkers, sliding bottom bouncers or bottom bouncers to achieve the depth needed, these weights can be used with the crawler harnesses as well. Snap weights as well.
4. The leader length when using the bullet sinker can very from 1 foot to what ever you chose depending on how far the fish are off the bottom. I use a small bb size split shot as a stopper to adjust the bullet weights length between the jig and the bullet sinker. This method works as a sliding live bait rig.
5. The split shot method would be about the same as the bullet sinker way but the fish would feel the weight of the sinker when biting.
6. The sliding bottom bouncer method is another live bait way to present the bait but you can typically go a little faster or troll with them. I use the bb size split shot for a stopper as well and the length I go is from 3 to 6 feet on the leader.
7. With the bottom bouncer and the floating jigs I use a 42 inch leader and troll most often. I use this method on planner boards and you can go very slowly this way. If the fish feel the planner board and are fussy I give them some extra line to allow them to eat the bait.
8. Do not be afraid to use bottom bouncers and spinners when going after suspended fish.
9. Night crawlers work in cold water; I have caught fish on them into late November during the day time hours.
